How We Go Anywhere Your Relocating Employees are Headed To

Corporate relocation, also referred to as global workforce mobility or global mobility, involves the transfer of employees and their families to a new work location - within the same country, across a region, or around the world. In the global mobility industry, there are three primary types of transfers:

A permanent or localized move - usually defined as a move in which the employee transfers from the origin country payroll to the destination country payroll and lives in the country on their local salary

A long-term assignment (LTA) - which describes an employee (and accompanying family, as applicable) ‘on assignment’ in a new location for several years, but still ‘home-based’ in the country of origin

A short-term assignment (STA) - in which, more often than not, only the employee is ‘relocated’ for a shorter period of time, from a few weeks to several months, typically to assist in a project with a defined business need, such as opening a new office, onboarding new technology, training a new team, and other similar high impact efforts.

How an Employee's Assignment Usually Begins

Employee policies govern the benefits the relocating employee receives, including their temporary living benefit.

A typical corporate relocation policy for long-term assignments, for example, will offer a company-paid temporary living benefit for a specific number of days (30, 45, or 60 days are common lengths of stay), during which time the employee and family look for and eventually move to their long-term housing for the remainder of their assignment.

A short-term assignment would not include this transition- instead, the employee is provided housing for the duration of their assignment but does not move into a long-term unfurnished rental. In this case, at the end of their assignment, the employee returns to their country of origin or moves to their next project.

A permanent or localized move, where the employee and family become ongoing residents in the country, may include a short-term housing benefit as the employee transitions to their permanent home. 

All these benefits are offered through the employer and are subject to considerations such as business needs, HR policies, and tax and legal/immigration compliance.
