Searching for Sustainability In Your Temporary Living Accommodation

According to Google’s own Google Trends research, the search term “green hotel” has increased 4x since March 2020. As a customer-responsive company, Google is converting that trend into a search service for its customers, and as of late September will be presenting ‘certified green’ options in its hotel accommodations travel searches.  The green-customer trend is validated by a Booking.com survey from earlier this year, in which 83% of nearly 30,000 respondents defined sustainable travel to be ‘vital.’ .

A search is not a confirmed booking, and a consumer looking for an adventure or alternative-stay option may have different criteria than a business traveler looking for lodgings within a commutable distance of her office, but they have a shared interest in what we’re calling the ‘search for sustainability.’  Guests of all kinds want to stay in properties that are safe and sanitary and see a sustainability certification as additional validation the building operator is clued-in to environmental impacts and acting responsibly at a local level.  Most importantly, a confirmed green credential helps to offset consumer skepticism linked to ‘greenwashing’, the practice of marketing a green commitment without actually delivering on it.

Earning a green credential in the hospitality business requires an investment of time and money and every operator has the right and responsibility to assess their return on investment. The best credentialing consulting companies guide hospitality operators through a stepped process of transparent cost/benefit, starting with an assessment of current state and then a guided plan of incremental steps to not only ‘go green’ but also save money.

Sustainably responsible property management can also:

  • lower electrical costs
  • reduce water usage
  • reduce single use plastic waste
  • inspire more environmentally efficient landscaping

An expanded scope of hospitality sustainability can also include walking maps (and apps) to help guests navigate the local area and manage their personal carbon footprint (and daily steps).  Other proof points of sustainable practices:  using locally sourced foods, promoting nearby businesses and services, providing fresh water (not in plastic bottles), and sponsoring events, whether a cooking class promoting local natural bounty or a ‘top 10 walkable sites in the city’.  The point is that sustainability is aligned with customer engagement and confirms the credibility and distinction of your property.

At the level of global services purchasing and business strategy, we have daily confirmation that corporate clients and their service partners (relocation management companies and travel management companies) are fully committed to a sustainable supply chain, required to deliver measurable proof of actions and results.  Our best measurement?  100% of the requests for proposal (RFP) that we respond to ask about the environmentally responsible practices of our global supply chain.  In turn, we’re committed to sourcing the solutions that match the expectations of our clients and their traveling and relocating employees.

In partnership with The Association of Serviced Apartments, we’re supporting the Green Tourism hospitality-provider sustainability credential recommended by ASAP to its global membership.  Housing suppliers who earn the green credential will be flagged in our epic search and software system and promoted to decision makers and guests.

The market is searching for credible, green hospitality solutions.  Let’s make that happen. For more information:  [email protected]
